{'I could have killed them' - Lawson experiences close call with F1 marshals
Formula 1 racer Liam Lawson disclosed he came dangerously close to a potentially deadly incident during Sunday's F1 event in Mexico when two marshals ran across the track immediately ahead of his car
The alarming incident took place on the third lap when safety workers were seen on the track as Lawson was getting back on the race following an premature pit stop to swap his compromised front wing
Driver's Immediate Reaction
Immediately after, Racing Bulls driver Lawson communicated to his race engineer saying: "Are you kidding me? Did you witness that? I could have... killed them"
"I genuinely couldn't process what I was witnessing"
"I exited on a fresh hard compound tires, and then I approached Turn One and unexpectedly appeared two guys running across the track"
"I came close to striking one of them, truthfully, it was so dangerous"
Track Safety Questioned
"Clearly there's been a communication breakdown somewhere but I've never experienced that before, and I haven't really seen that in the past. It's completely unacceptable"
"We cannot comprehend how on a active circuit marshals can be authorized to just run across the track like that. I have no idea why, I'm sure we'll get some form of reasoning, but it really can't happen again"
Governing Body Reviewing
Formula 1's governing body, the International Automobile Federation (FIA), is currently investigating the events
"Subsequent to a first corner event, the race directors was notified that debris was present on the track at the critical section of that bend" stated the FIA
"In the third rotation, marshals were notified and made ready to enter the track and clear the fragments once every vehicle had gone by"
"The moment it was realized that Lawson had pitted, the instructions to dispatch personnel were rescinded and a double yellow flag was raised in that section"
"We are still investigating what occurred following that moment"
