Federal Reserve Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year During Financial Instability

The US monetary authority reduced borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut in the current year amid economic turbulence originating from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement notes. “Inflation has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed typically analyzes BLS data to assess labor market conditions, including the count of new jobs created to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in early September, prior to the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The number of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.

Private Data Show Continued Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to release September’s employment data in early October, it suspended its publication once the closure started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the private sector eliminated 32,000 jobs in last month, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, which he had earlier attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Reveals Moderate Increase

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still released its inflation report for last month that indicated that costs are rising, although gradually. Costs increased 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
