EU Naval Forces Rescue Crew Following Somali Pirate Attack on Oil Tanker

European Union maritime units have safely freed two dozen crew members from a Malta-registered oil tanker that was attacked by pirates off the shoreline of Somali waters.

The Hellas Aphrodite, which was carrying fuel from India to South African destinations, was taken over on the recent incident when armed pirates began shooting with machine guns and explosive projectiles before taking control of the ship.

The crew locked themselves inside a fortified citadel while the attackers took control of the marine transport.

Mission Accomplished

A Spanish warship, functioning under the EU's anti-piracy mission, reached the tanker on the following day. Special forces boarded the vessel and found all two dozen sailors safe and sound.

"The crew is secure and no harm have been documented. During the ordeal, they remained in the secure area in direct contact with command center," authorities stated, adding that a "show of force" had convinced the attackers to leave the ship before the naval unit reached the location.

Ongoing Threat

Authorities emphasized that the threat risk in the area "continues to be serious" as the pirates are still in the vicinity.

The mission involved a helicopter, drone and surveillance aircraft. Shortly before, another ship in the same area was approached by a fast boat but successfully avoided it.

Return of Maritime Crime

This event represents the most recent in a spate of incidents that have created concern about a resurgence of maritime crime in the region.

Such activity had declined when global maritime security and protective protocols were introduced after reaching their highest point more than a ten years past.

However, assaults by Yemen's Houthi rebels on vessels in the Arabian Sea, which have been carried out for the recent period, have caused vessels to be rerouted through the African coastline - opening up new possibilities for Somali gangs.

Statistical Overview

  • Multiple piracy cases of piracy took place off the shoreline of Somalia last year
  • Several vessel takeovers were documented among these events
  • A single case of piracy was noted in 2023

Maritime security experts continue to monitor the developments as vessel operators travel through these potentially hazardous shipping lanes.
