Adolescent Found Dead After False Allegations of Taking Cremated Remains
One teenage youth was found dead only a few days following being wrongly accused of stealing the ashes of a dead infant during a break-in, a coroner's inquiry has heard.
Heartbreaking Finding
The young boy's mother and father found his remains in his bedroom at his Flintshire home on 19 November 2021.
False Allegations Begin
The inquest heard how his mother got a communication on 8 November 2021 via social media, from a individual inquiring if Kai was her offspring. The message stated: "Inform him appreciation for breaking into my flat."
In a testimony read to the court, the mother said the woman had been in the news, asserting her infant's ashes had been taken in a burglary - a allegation which was false.
Police Investigation
An investigation report from police later determined the alleged break-in victim had "lied to police" and "evidence shows that the property was not stolen in the first place".
Media reports about the supposed stolen ashes attracted social media comments, and although Kai was not identified in the messages, his parent said individuals "knew it was him".
The "online posts were really upsetting", she said.
Emotional Wellbeing Impact
She added that her son had been identified with mild attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and as part of that disorder, other individuals' views really were important to him.
"This must have hurt him deeply," she commented, "especially when this was untrue".
The teenager was detained at his residence, but no evidence was found. He was transported to a law enforcement facility and later freed pending further inquiry.
Authorities said they would be in touch, the inquest learned, but had failed to reached out to the family by the moment of his passing.
Isolation and Worry
His parent said Kai "withdrew into himself" after the arrest and "repeatedly inquired me whether I had heard anything from the authorities", because his ADHD meant sometimes "certain periods could seem like much longer".
When she spoke to him about the alleged incident, she said her child informed her he had gone into the house because the woman who resided there had said he could utilize the bathroom whenever he needed, but denied taking anything.
Online Harassment
In a joint statement between her and her spouse, the mother said her child was being harassed online after the allegations.
The proceedings learned that a young adult urged Kai to end his life.
She had no worries on the evening before he died, describing how she had heard him "chuckling and joking".
She described him as a "caring, affectionate" young man, and said her "relatives is totally shattered".
He had been "clearly hiding his concerns", she stated, adding that he could not stand to have anyone "think bad of him".
School Reaction
The hearing received testimony from educational staff at Connah's Quay secondary school.
On 8 November, she "heard some students discussing that the student had been detained and that was the initial I learned".
"He informed me... he'd was innocent," she added.
After the conversation, the educator said she called the family's parents' landline and provided a voicemail saying she had communicated to the student about the accusations.
The court heard his parents said they never got that message.
Official Finding
Lead investigator told the inquest he would await documents regarding what improvements had been made to handling individuals with the condition, before deciding whether he should make a avoidance of subsequent fatalities report.
Delivering a narrative conclusion, he said: "Approximately November 8th, 2021, unsupported allegations were made against the teenager, a young individual.
"Likely falsehoods were subsequently exaggerated and exaggerated through the platform of social media.
"During November 11th, he was interviewed by the police and following his interview he was freed whilst investigations continued."
The official determined: "There is no evidence that the acts or omissions of any organization led to or added to his passing and although it was the outcome of a self-inflicted action it is impossible to discern his purpose."
